Charles “Shorty” Kincaid

January 10, 1970 – October 9, 2011

Charles “Shorty” Kincaid, 41, of Orrick, died Sunday, October 9, 2011 near Orrick.

Charles was born in Excelsior Springs, Mo., on January 10, 1970 to Jerry and Helen (Nelson) Kincaid. He had lived most of his life in this area and was a 1989 graduate of Excelsior Springs High School. On November 8, 1996, he was united in marriage to Sheryl Silkwood. Charles was currently employed as a dismantling specialist for Late Model Auto Parts in Kansas City, where he had worked for the past four years.

Shorty as he was best known by most everyone, had a fondness for demolition derbys, working on cars and trucks and riding motorcycles. He also liked playing pool and spending time with his kids and grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Kincaid in 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Sheryl Kincaid of the home; sons, Charles Cody Kincaid and J.D. Kincaid, both of the home, and Jeff Cochran of Marshall, Mo.; daughters, Crystal Kincaid, and Tiffany Brown and husband, Christopher, all of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; his mother, Helen Harris of Richmond, Mo.; brother, Michael Harris of Richmond, Mo.; sister, Tammy Morrison of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; three grandsons and a granddaughter.

The family will greet friends at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2011. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Gowing Funeral Home, burial in South Point Cemetery near Orrick.

Memorials are suggested to the Charles Kincaid Memorial Fund, payable to Sheryl Kincaid.

Dianna Fay Spor

October 12, 1942 – October 4, 2011

Dianna Fay Spor, 68, of Orrick, Mo., passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Ray County Memorial Hospital. Dianna was born in Carrollton, Mo., on October 12, 1942 to Merrile and Dorothy (Smith) Keltner. She graduated from Excelsior Springs High School with the class of 1960. On June 4, 1961, she was united in marriage to Robert Wayne Spor. To this union was born two sons, Rodger Wayne Spor and Stephen Blaine Spor.

Dianna had lived most of her life in this area. She was a cook for the Orrick School District from 1982 until 2008. She loved cooking and taking care of all the kids. She most enjoyed the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Dianna wanted to be a farmers wife from the time she was a young girl. She loved taking care of others and her many dogs and cats. She always put others before herself, which is why she was so loved. She is going to be greatly missed.

Dianna was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Marilyn Shade, and her son, Rodger Wayne Spor on April 16, 2006.

She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Bob Spor of the home; son, Stephen Spor and wife, Shelly; and her six precious grandchildren, Nicole Marie Spor, Shelby Leann Spor, Dakota Eugene Spor, Shelby Dawn Spor, Shance Alan Spor and Clorissa Holt-Spor.

The family will greet friends at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2011, with funeral services immediately following the visitation at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Missouri City Cemetery, Missouri City, Mo.

Memorials are suggested to the Ray County Humane Society in her memory.

Betty Joann Loyd

April 1, 1927 – August 4, 2011

Betty Joann Loyd, 84, Orrick, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo.

Betty was born on April 1, 1927 in Camden, Mo., to Vernon Leonard Huffman and Adelia Minerva Toner Huffman. She was a lifelong resident of Ray County. Betty was united in marriage to William Eldred Loyd on March 27, 1954 in a ceremony in Richmond, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1974. Betty was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church and was a member of and past matron of the Richmond Order of Eastern Star. Betty had worked at various places during her life, among them were Montgomery Wards in Denver, Colo., The Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City and The Social Security Administration in Kansas City, Mo., The Bank of Orrick, and then was the executive secretary and bookkeeper for the Gowing Corp. in Orrick from Sept. 2, 1962 through 1998. She was a co-owner of Loyd Truck Lines in Orrick from 1970 to 1973. Upon her husband’s death, she became the owner of the truck line from 1974 to 1981 when it was sold.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Eldred Loyd , a brother, Joseph Leonard Huffman, and a sister, Vinetta Maxine Shelton.

Survivors include her children, Joseph William Loyd and Dee of Orrick, Mo., and Vinetta A. Garnett and Bob of Gladstone, Mo.; four grandchildren, Ginger Sparks and husband Randy, Susanne Mathews, Darin Savage and wife Carrie, and Tammy Parcel; 11 great-grandchildren, Cody Sparks, Amanda Jeffers and husband Josh, Brandon Wilson, Trevor Mathews, Mason Mathews, Anthony Savage and wife Megan, Ashton Savage, Jayme Savage, Zachary Parcel, and Haley Parcel; and six great-great-grandchildren, Ryider Hershburger, Kadince Jeffers, Alicia Johnmeyer, Alexis Johnmeyer, Ethan Savage and Jazzlynn Savage.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011 at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. An Order of Eastern Star service will begin at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 at Camden First United Methodist Church in Camden. Burial in South Point Cemetery near Orrick, Mo.

Samantha Leanne Grosko Mathews, 33, of Liberty, Mo., died July 18, 2011 in Independence, Mo.

Samantha was born on August 26, 1977 in Kansas City, Mo.

She is survived by her father, Stephen Grosko of Holt, Mo., her mother and step father, Robbie and Randy Lampkin of Liberty, Mo.; two sisters, Jennifer Ginnings of Olathe, Kans., and Stephanie Roberts of Humansville, Mo.; her children, Haylee Mathews, Dorothy Mathews, Abigail Mathews, Carlee Mathews and Lacy Mathews, all of Trenton, Mo.; and her grandmother, Virginia Lampkin of Lawson, Mo.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Orrick, Mo. Cremation with burial at a later date in South Point Cemetery near Orrick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to the Samantha Leanne Grosko Mathews memorial fund in care of Community America Credit Union.

Mary Lee Proffitt

February 15, 1920 – July 14, 2011

Mary Lee Proffitt, 91 of Richmond, Mo., passed away at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Shirkey Rehab and Nursing Center in Richmond, Mo.

Mary Lee was born near Camden, Mo., on February 15, 1920 to James Berry MacDonald and Betty Euginia (Neer) MacDonald. She lived her entire life in Ray County. Mary Lee was united in marriage to Milton Newell Proffitt on May 11, 1940 in Ray County. She was a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a member of the Friendship Christian Church in rural Richmond until it disbanded and then attended the Orrick Christian Church.

Mary Lee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Milton Newell Proffitt on November 7, 1986 a brother, Eugene MacDonald, and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Proffitt in 2001.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mac Proffitt and wife, Mary, of Camden, Mo., and Jim Proffitt and wife, Dona, of Richmond, Mo. Her grandchildren, Brian Proffitt and wife, Marlo, Lindsey Proffitt, Jill Pyles and husband, Troy, Jamie Sue Honeycutt and husband, Don, and Jolynn Ernst and husband, Noll; and five great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011 at the Orrick Christian Church with Pastor Donna Murphy-Ceradsky officiating. Burial will be in South Point Cemetery near Orrick.

Aaron J. Meyer

September 7, 1994 – April 23, 2011

Aaron J. Meyer, 16 of Orrick, Mo., died Saturday, April 23, 2011 in a hunting accident northwest of Orrick. Aaron was born on September 7, 1994 in Kansas City, Mo., to L Aaron Meyer and Pamela (Dilks) Meyer. Aaron moved to Orrick in 2005 and was a sophomore at Orrick High School. Aaron played football as a defensive end for the Bearcats. He was a member of the Orrick High School Marching Band playing the trombone and drums, a member of the Orrick High School Golf Team and a member of the high school drama and science clubs.

Aaron attended Awanna at the First Baptist Church in Orrick. He loved anything outdoors which included hunting, fishing, and boating. He also enjoyed working. He had an outstanding ability to make people happy. He loved to smile and to hug. A very selfless and fun loving individual that touched many lives in a positive way during his short journey in life.

Survivors include his parents, L Aaron and Pam Meyer of the home in Orrick; his older brother, Levi Meyer, 19, of Orrick, Mo., and his twin brother, Adam Meyer, 16, of the home; and his paternal grandmother, Patricia Norcross of Orrick, Mo.

Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, “FRamily” and friends in the community of Orrick.

Aaron was preceded in death by his grandma, Cookie Reddell, and his great grandma, Kathryn Flieschman.

The family will receive friends at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Richmond, Mo., with Mr. Bryan Thompson officiating and Matt Gooch assisting. Music by Troy Jennings and Cole Roberts. Burial will follow in Riffe Cemetery north of Orrick.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Presbury, Derrick Dennis, Tony Burnett, Steven Higginbotham, Mathew McCaulley, and James McCaulley.

Special Honorary Pallbearers will be Levi Meyer and Adam Meyer

Rayda Arleen Carlson, 91, of Orrick, Mo., died Tuesday evening , March 29, 2011 at her home in Orrick.

Rayda was born on November 29, 1919 in Ellenburg, N.Y., to John and Cora Brooks. She had lived in Orrick for the past three years. Rayda had worked as a therapy aide for over 28 years for the State of New York before retiring on April 1, 1976. After her retirement, she worked for nursing homes and hospitals until 1995. She was a member of the protestant faith.

She loved to crochet and knit. She also loved to bake and decorate cakes.

Rayda was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Carl Albert Carlson in 1967.

Survivors include a son, Carl Carlson of Orrick, Mo., two daughters, Barbara Carlson of Orrick, Mo., and Sandra Lee Baldwick of New Milford, Conn., a son, Terry Chattelle of California, and a sister, Huertta of New Haven, Conn. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

The family will greet friends on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Memorial services will immediately follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the First Congregational Church Cemetery in Sherman, Conn.

Rayda was a constant, steady person that was always there if needed. Her nature was serious a lot of times when younger, but dependable. She enjoyed having family members around greatly. Rayda taught me how to knit, crochet. She was feisty and energetic. As soon as Spring showed, picnics were a mainstay at Harry Brook Park as I recall… Her beautiful plants were lush and she made sure they stayed that way. James Harvey Collins

January 13, 1932 – March 29, 2011

James Harvey Collins, 79 of rural Orrick, Mo., died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at his home northwest of Orrick. He was born on January 13, 1932 in Newton County, Ark., to Thomas Jefferson Collins and Mildred May (Smith) Collins. James lived in the Orrick community for over 20 years. He was a supervisor for the former K & G Sales Warehouse in Kansas City, Mo., before he retired from his duties in 1985.

He was an avid coon hunter and loved playing the guitar. He had a passion for music.

James was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eugene and a sister, Jolene.

Survivors include his son, W.P. Collins and ( Rosemary) of Orrick, Mo., a sister, Goldie Farmer of Elm Springs, Ark., grandsons, Anthony Collins and (Cindy Harden) of Independence, Mo., and Randy Kent and (Juanita) of Mt. Judea, Ark., and granddaughter, Sara Ryan and (Peter) of Greenfield, Mass., and his canine companion Cheyenne. There will be no local services.

Mr. Collins will be cremated with memorial services and inurnment at a later date in Smith Cemetery in Vender, Ark.

Marcella McAfee

October 2, 1930 – March 12, 2011

Marcella Rose “Tot” McAfee, 80, of Orrick, Mo., passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the North Kansas City Hospice House following a brief illness.

Marcella Rose, better known by her family and friends as Tot, was born on October 2, 1930 north of Orrick in the Albany community to Roy Martin and Lorena Hayes. On March 24, 1950 she was married to Malcolm “Tommy” McAfee in a ceremony performed in Liberty, Mo. She had lived most of her life in Orrick, except for when she and her husband moved to Carlton, Minn., in 1971, when her and Tommy transferred with his job. They lived in Carlton until they moved back to Orrick in 1978.

Tot was a 1948 graduate of Orrick High School and was a member of the Orrick Baptist Church and she was a lifetime member of the Carlton, Minn., VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary.

Tot was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Malcolm “Tommy” McAfee on May 10, 1989, and three brothers, Roy Kenneth Martin, Dennis Ray Barber and Danny Gene Barber.

Survivors include two sons, Jim “Bo Bo” McAfee of the home, Kenny McAfee and wife, Sandra, of Orrick, Mo.; a daughter, Leisa Cook and husband, Dennis, of Orrick, Mo.; a brother, Ronnie Barber and wife, Helen, of St. Joseph, Mo.; sister-in-law, Fern McAfee of Raymore, Mo.; granddaughter, Kenda Ransom and husband, Steve, of Orrick, Mo.; and great grandchildren, Dane and Sophia Ransom of Orrick, Mo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Gowing funeral home in Orrick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Gowing Chapel with the Rev. Robert Horton officiating. Burial will be in South Point Cemetery near Orrick, Mo.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Orrick Fire & Rescue Squad or The North Kansas City Hospice House.

What a sad day when I heard of the loss of a Great Lady. Tot was a special lady. I am blessed to have known her during her lifetime. She is the only one who could bake the best peanut butter pie. Tot worked for McPike’s Wholesale Drug years before I did. Many of the employees still remembered all the good times and deeds that Tot did for that company years after she left.
