Jessie Mae Bowen Hill

July 3, 1931 – March 10, 2015

Jessie Mae (Bowen) Hill, 83, of Kansas City, Mo., died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at her home.

Jessie, known by family as “Tiddle”, was born July 3, 1931 to Hassie Marian (Butler) Lee and Jerry Myres Lee in Amazonia, Mo. On May 2, 1981, Jessie married James Russell Hill. He survives at the home.

Jessie worked her entire adult life at Montogomery Ward in Kansas City, Mo., as an executive secretary until her retirement.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Ernest Steven Bowen, her sister, Sarah Maxine O’Dell, her brothers, Jerry Marion “Bud” Lee and George Edgar Lee, and three siblings in infancy.

Survivors include her daughters, Cathy Sue (Bowen) Dorton and Marcia Elelyn (Bowen) McAtee; her step son, Randall Stephen Hill and Cathy Bowen; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Gowing Funeral Home, 202 Adams Street, Orrick, Mo., with graveside services following at 2 p.m. at South Point Cemetery near Orrick, Mo.

Melvin Lyndon Patton

March 28, 1938 – February 16, 2015

Melvin Lyndon Patton, 76, of Sebastian, Fla., formerly of Kansas City, passed away February 16, 2015 in Sebastian.

Melvin was born on March 28, 1938 in Vero Beach, Fla., to Willie F. Patton and Madge May (Dills) Patton. He was united in marriage on March 17, 1961 to Roberta Dianne Hamilton, who survives him.

He served his country in the U.S. Army. Melvin retired from the Ford Motor Company Claycomo assembly plant after 30 years of service.

Melvin enjoyed music and singing. He loved being with his family and sharing stories.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Roberta D. Patton of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Melvin Patton and Kim of Independence, Mo.; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three brothers, Harry Patton of Melbourne, Fla., Bert Patton of Sebastian, Fla., and Troy Patton of Palm Bay, Fla.; a sister, Ann Agent (Don) of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and numerous other family members.

Melvin was preceded in death by a son, Paul Baker; his parents, Willie F. and Madge M. Patton; brothers, Tommy Patton, John Patton and Pat Patton; two sisters, Mary Joiner and an infant sister who died at birth.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick, Mo., and from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Trenton Church of The Nazerene in Trenton, Mo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with The Reverend Steve Bramblett officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery, Modena, Mo.

Linda Kay Mize

December 24, 2954 – January 19, 2015

Linda Kay Mize, 60, of Excelsior Springs, died suddenly on Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Excelsior Springs Hospital.

Linda was born on December 24, 1954 in Kansas City, Mo., to William E. Stagner and Mabel Francis (Shields) Stagner. Linda lived most of her life in the greater Kansas City area. Linda was united in marriage on January 8, 2000 to Cyril Scott Mize in a ceremony performed in Fort Scott, Kans., and he survives her at the home.

Linda loved her grandkids and family and the time she spent with them. She enjoyed porcelain dolls, listening to Elvis Presley music and drinking her ice coffee. While she struggled with many severe health issues, she always found a way to enjoy the things that mattered most to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant sister, Cynthia Stagner.

She is survived by her husband; her children, Randy Jonston of Ohio, Glenn Russell Stagner of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Karen Parker of Independence, Mo., and Sherry Cleveland of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; her stepmother, Karen Oakley of New Mexico; and brothers, William David Stagner of Belton, Mo., and Roy Jason Stagner of New York; her paternal grandmother, Edith Stagner of Orrick, Mo.; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 with a memorial service following at 6 p.m. at the Prathersville Bible Church, Prathersville, Mo., with Pastor Bill Ross officiating.

Memorials to help with expenses may be given to the family and payable to either Scott Mize or David Stagner.

Lois C. Werle

November 20, 1930 – January 20, 2015

Lois Corine Werle of Orrick, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the home of her daughter in Richmond, Mo. She lived most of her life in Ray County, Mo., and had lived in Orrick for 67 years.

Lois was born on November 20, 1930. She was married to Dennis Werle on January 31, 1948. She had eight children. She was a member of the Baptist faith.

Lois loved growing flowers and gardening. She especially liked to play Bingo and card games. She loved to cook and host her loving family for dinners and celebrations.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dennis Werle in 2002, and daughters, Marsha Hankins in 2011, and Georgia McFall in 1982.

Lois is survived by her children, Gary and Linda Werle of Orrick, Mo., Donna and Allen Burnett of Richmond, Mo., Rhonda and Dale Copeland of Polo, Mo., Ben Werle of Lawson, Mo., Jimmy and Linda Werle of Camden, Mo., Anita and Jim Carr of Norborne, Mo., and a son-in-law, Gary Hankins of Henrietta, Mo. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery northwest of Orrick, with Elder Darle Siegel officiating.

Patricia May “Pat” Harris

October 15, 1947 – December 3, 2014

Patricia May “Pat” Harris, 67 of rural Orrick, Mo., passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2014 at the NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, surrounded by her loving family.

Patricia was born on October 15, 1947 near Rolla, Mo., to Henry Raymond Childers and Bernice Mae (Donley) Childers. She had attended schools in Orrick and Excelsior Springs. On August 9, 1963, she was united in marriage to Melvin Clay Harris of Orrick in a ceremony in Excelsior Springs.

Pat enjoyed crocheting, reading and tending to her flowers. She loved animals of all kinds.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin Harris in 2010; a son, Jonathon W. Harris; grandsons, Jonathon E. Harris and Derek Rash; and a great grandson, Dalton Cooper.

She is survived by her children, Gene Harris (Barb), Clint Harris (Susan), and Anthony Harris (Brooke) all of Orrick, Mo., Cynthia Cox (Paul) of Richmond, Mo., Christie Sweet (Tom) of Edgerton, Mo., and Sandra Harris of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; brothers, Freddie Childers of Knoxville, Mo., and Robbie Childers of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; her beloved grandchildren, Christopher Jewell, Nicholas Harris, Amanda Harris, Brandon Harris, Courtney Harris, Cody Harris, Mackenzie Dobbins Harris, Lane Harris, Griffen Harris, Tuff Harris, Annabelle Harris, Madyson Harris, Laura Rash Cooper, Colorado Cope, Paul Cox, Jr., and Chester Cox; great grandchildren, Jonathon Harris, Haylie Cooper, Brody Cooper, and another one on the way. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Sally who lives at the home.

Ann Eliza Bernovich

June 6, 1941 – November 26, 2014

Ann Eliza Bernovich, 73, of Orrick, Mo., passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Mo.

Ann was born on June 6, 1941 in Peoria County, Illinois to Henry and Alberta (Munro) Mohn. She had lived most of her life in Illinois before moving to Orrick ten years ago. She was of the Christian faith. She had been employed in food service as a baker for many years. Ann enjoyed many past times, which included sewing, baking and painting crafts. She also loved time spent with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Mohn.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Timothy Heady (Cheri) of Orrick, Mo., Kerry Heady of Creve Couer, Ill., Alberta Trilikis (Paul) of Peoria, Ill., Christina Alcerez (Dan) of Minn., Donald Bernovich of Minn., and Shawn Bernovich of Creve Couer, Ill.; sisters, Patricia Spiller of Florida, and Jean Ihnen of Illinois; brothers, Henry Mohn and Dick Mohn, both of Illinois. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Ann will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2014, followed by funeral services at 2:30 p.m. at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Mr. Paul Trilikis will officiate.

Burial will be in South Point Cemetery near Orrick, Mo.

Paul Henry Basler

January 1, 1956 – November 5, 2014

Paul Henry Basler, 58, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at his home.

Paul was born on January 1, 1956 to Harry A. VanSkike and Beverly Ann (Parker) VanSkike. He had lived most of his life in the Excelsior Springs area. He was a graduate of Winnetonka High School. On May 12, 1989, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Sue Renchen, who survives him at the home.

Paul had worked for the American Italian Pasta Plant in Excelsior Springs for the past two years, as well as working as a night stocker for the Excelsior Springs Walmart for the past 17 years.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1981.

Paul is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathleen Basler of the home; his father and stepmother, Harry VanSkike and Alma Jean VanSkike of Orrick, Mo.; his sisters, Kathy Atherton of Independence, Mo., and Christina Castlebury of Kansas City, Mo. He is also survived by his two loving dogs, Angel and Precious.

The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Rock Falls Baptist Church north of Orrick, Mo., with memorial services immediately following at 11 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will follow at South Point Cemetery near Orrick.

Robert Stroud “Bob” Pennington

March 10, 1918 – October 27, 2014

Robert Stroud “Bob” Pennington, of Richmond, Mo.,, formerly of Orrick, Mo., passed away Monday, October 27, 2014 at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.

Robert was born on March 10, 1918 in Dalton, Mo., to George Clarkson and Bertha May Carson Clarkson. Following Mr. Clarkson’s death, Bertha Clarkson was united in marriage to Tolley Herbert Pennington in Holden, Mo., on June 26, 1919. Mr. Tolley H. Pennington adopted Robert and raised him as his own. He lived most of his life in the Ray County areas of Orrick and Richmond.

On May 30, 1936, he was united in marriage to Billie Marie Cheshier in a ceremony in Olathe, Kans.

His first job was working on the Wabash Railroad as a young man and later he founded, owned and operated Pennington’s Welding Shop in Orrick, Mo., from 1950 until 1980. Bob was a great welder and was recognized for this talent and was contracted by the U.S. Airforce to weld tankers during W.W.II.

He was great at fixing and building things. He had been an artist for The Kansas City Star. He loved fishing and he especially was devoted to his loving wife, Billie. Bob was a member of the Fleming Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Billie Marie Pennington on Feb. 17, 2007, a sister, and a brother.

Bob is survived by his children, Larry Pennington and wife, Janice of Camden, Mo., Joyce Stock of Independence, Mo., Roger Pennington and wife, Marsha of Liberty, Mo., Karen Vandiver of Orrick, Mo., Nina Courtney and husband, Doug of Richmond, Mo., and Robin Cado and husband, Patrick of Lexington, Mo.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 31, 2014 at South Point Cemetery near Orrick.

Memorials may be given to South Point Cemetery Association in his memory.

Murrietta “Murt” Nichols

May 5, 1955 – September 26, 2014

Murrietta was born on May 5, 1955 in Richmond, Mo., the daughter of Murry (Hoot) Nichols and Viola V. (Mansell) Nichols. Murrietta passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at the River Bend Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lexington, Mo., where she had resided since September 1, 2014. She was 59 years old at the time of her passing.

Murt lived in Ray and Lafayette Counties most of her life. She had been a member of the VFW in Lexington, and had attended church at the Fleming Baptist Church. She worked at Stone Container Company in Blue Springs for many years until her health failed.

Murrietta was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jack and Jerry Nichols; and her infant daughter, MaKayla.

Murrietta is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Barbara Nichols of Warsaw, Mo., and her sister and brother-in-law, Janice and John (Stretch) Griffith of Corder, Mo.; her aunt, Era Jean Gorham of Camden, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; her best friend forever, Melcina Smith; and many, many friends and relatives.

It is the desire of the family to hold a visitation from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick, followed by funeral services at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Cremation will follow the services with inurnment at a later date.

Joseph Edward Roberts Jr.

January 14, 1957 – September 20, 2014

Joseph Edward Roberts, Jr., 57 of Orrick, Mo., died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Liberty Hospital.

Joseph was born on January 14, 1957 in Lexington, Mo., to Joseph Edward Roberts, Sr., and Donna Mae (Alshire) Roberts. He had lived his entire life in the Orrick area. He graduated from Orrick High School with the class of 1977.

On February 25, 2008 he was united in marriage to Darlene Kay Combs in a ceremony held in Tipton, Mo.

For several years, Joseph worked for a steam cleaning company that steam cleaned the air conditioner units at Walmart stores around the country. Prior, he had worked for Orrick Stone Company and Missouri Rock Company as a truck driver. He was also a skilled artist and painter. Joseph was forced to take a medical retirement several years ago.

Joseph loved to hunt, fish, garden, cook and do home canning. He especially enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Joseph loved horses and dogs.

Preceding Joseph in death were his father, Joseph Edward Roberts, Sr. in 1997, his grandmother, Cleo Murphy in 1986, and an uncle, Gene Alshire in 2010.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Darlene Kay Roberts of the home; sons, Joseph Roberts-Williams and William Roberts of Lexington, Mo.; daughters, Stephanie Jackson of Mo., Cherokee Roberts and Viola Lynn Roberts of Independence, Mo.; step son, Stacey Combs of St. Louis, Mo; his mother, Donna M. Roberts of Orrick, Mo.; brothers, Chet Roberts of Camden, Mo., Bill Roberts of Orrick, Mo., Dan Shirley of Springfield, Mo., Rob Roberts of Crystal Lakes, Mo., and Terry Roberts of Orrick, Mo.; sisters, Viola Stagner and Callie Roberts of Orrick, Mo.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 24, 2014 at the Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Gowing Funeral Home, burial in South Point Cemetery in Orrick, Mo.
