Robert Preston “Covey” Stockton Sr.

October 20, 1925 – April 28, 2015

Robert Preston “Covey” Stockton, Sr., 89, of Liberty, Mo., formerly of Orrick, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 11:46 p.m. at Liberty Hospital.

Covey, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on October 20, 1925 at Orrick, Mo., to James A. and Oma Jane (Bullock) Stockton. He attended schools in Orrick and at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served during W.W.II and then returned to Orrick. He lived there for a short time, then moved to Hunter, North Dakota, where he farmed, met and married Marie J. Bloom. He and Marie then returned to Orrick to farm and make their home. He stopped farming in 1964. He then went to work for Northwest Missouri Power generating station in Missouri City as a fuel handler. When the plant was damaged and shut down for a few years, he worked for Orrick Farm Service. After the damage was fixed, the plant reopened as Independence Power and Light. He retired from there in 1991.

In February of 1968, he married Velma H. O’Dell of Liberty, Mo. They lived in Orrick until they moved to Liberty in 2009.

He was a beloved grandfather who enjoyed spending time with all grandchildren.

Covey was a member of the Orrick Assembly of God Church and was a member of the VFW and the Allison-Richardson American Legion Post # 326 in Orrick, Mo.

Covey loved to have fun and his cup was always half full. He loved having morning coffee with his buddies at the local restuarants. He liked to cut up and joke around and always enjoyed being around other people. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Covey was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evelyn Stockton and Ruth Stockton who died in early childhood; two brothers, Raymond Stockton and Louie Stockton; and a great grandson, Connaire Rader.

He is survived by his wife, Velma H. Stockton of the home; two sons, Robert P. “Bud” Stockton and wife, Joyce of Orrick, Mo., and Lloyd Andrew “Andy” Stockton of Peoria, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Marsha Pennington and husband, Roger of Liberty, Mo.; and James O’Dell and wife, Linda of Roach, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Orrick Assembly of God Church. Followed by memorial services at 12:30 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Alan Myers officiating, with full military honors following.

Private inurnment will be in South Point Cemetery.
